The Mendips Ring Walk

Do you have a mother, sister, aunt, girlfriend, niece or wife? Chances are you haven’t given much thought as to how they manage their monthly periods. It’s likely that they have access to clean sanitary products. The women and young girls in a community of Kajuki, Kenya unfortunately don’t have the same access. During their monthly period many of the girls have to take time off school, use leaves or dirty rags. Some have even resorted to prostitution to raise money to buy clean sanitary pads. My 12 year old daughter Annabel and I are taking on a challenge this Easter to try and end period poverty in the community.

We are walking the Mendip Ring which is a 117 mile circuit around the Mendip boundary. Our route will start from Butleigh and take us across to Frome, over to Burrington Coombe and then back to Butleigh via Westhay. We shall be starting on Easter Monday and hopefully finishing 6 days later. The money we raise shall be managed by the charity St Peters Life-Line who will set up a micro finance project in the community. The £4,600 we hope to raise will send out materials for the ladies in the village to make sanitary pads. The girls at the school shall be given the pads and the ladies who make them shall be able to sell the items to the other ladies in the village.
