Shindig Festival 2020
Next dates
Sorry, there are no future dates available
Combining old-skool legends with rising stars, the seventh edition of Shindig Festival (21st-24th May
2020) is going to be the finest yet. The revelry will commence in a stunning new location: Dillington
Estate in Somerset, beautiful parkland surrounding a 16th Century house and hotel.
The prophet of acid jazz, Roy Ayers, will be bathing Shindig in his mellow glow. A musician decades
ahead of his time even in the 60’s, he pioneered the feel-good jazz funk movement of the 70’s with his
band Roy Ayers Ubiquity. He has produced some of the most loved modern soul-jazz records of all
time with ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’ and ‘Searching’ and collaborated with Herbie Mann, Fela
Kuti and Eryka Badhu.
Hot on his heels, Goldie will be offering up his singular blend of jungle/drum’n bass, creating a
soundscape where melodies and vocals carry as much weight as growling basslines. Emerging as one
of the most recognisable musicians from the 90’s, his combination of hip hop and graffiti culture with
soul and jazz influences made him vital to the scene.
Jazzie B (DJ set), The Funki Dred and founder of Soul II Soul will be spinning a selection of doo-wop
soul and old school funk to bring the bump’n grind to the dance floor. From running sound systems in
the 70’s, to creating a record label and clothing line and hosting a show on Kiss FM, this king of the hill
doesn’t stay still.
It’s the 25th anniversary of Nightmares on Wax ‘Smokers Delight’ this year and Shindig are thrilled
that he will be taking us on an epic journey at The Dig Inn on Saturday night. His evergreen sound
defies categorisation but is one that has resonated with many people, making him the longest serving
artist on Warp Records. Rave royalty, Phil Hartnoll, half of Orbital, one of the longest standing and
most influential acts in dance music history is also on the bill.
Join the journey into the beating Afro-heart of Ibibio Sound Machine as they combine elements of
West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul in an infectious blend of dynamic
sound and pure joy. Warmduscher will be throwing their curveball of joyous punk-funk sleaze into
the mix; their live shows created a huge buzz around them in 2019; they’re now playlisted on 6Music
and tipped to be one of the hottest bands of 2020.
Norman Jay MBE, one of Shindig’s favourite sonic selectors, will be spanning the most diverse corners
of old skool funk and disco fuelled house whilst Huey Morgan celebrates the good times with his
eclectic selection of hip hop, funk and stone cold classics.
And so to Odyssey….Yes, that Odyssey. Shindig are ‘Going Back To My Roots’! Odyssey are best known
for a series of chart topping hits in the 70’s and 80’s and will be performing their inimitable funk, soul
and disco classics live. Supporting them will be the Reach Up DJ’s bringing their Disco Wonderland
show to Shindig. This is the new Disco, Boogie and Proto-House project from Portishead’s Andy Smith
and XL Recordings Co-Founder, Nick Halkes.
Francois K is considered by most as one of the forefathers of the New York house scene, holding
residencies at Paradise Garage and Studio 54. This is the mind, body & soul of house music and he is
flying in all the way from NYC to headline Shindig at the Stardust Discotheque. Joining him on the bill is
Danny Krivit (aka Mr K). Celebrating forty-five years as a New York City DJ and often referred to as
‘King Of The Re-edit’, Danny is going to go down a storm.
The dance floor at Shindig is always in safe hands with Greg Wilson. An electro-funk pioneer, a
resident at Manchester’s Hacienda and nowadays a leading figure in the global disco/re-edits
movement, he’s no stranger to Shindig Festival, having played at nearly every one. Terry Farley, yet
another big figure in the history of British dance music, is also playing. Terry was responsible for the
Junior Boys Own fanzine and record label alongside Andrew Weatherall and Pete Heller. Birdee also
joins him on the bill. By no means a newcomer but a fresh face on the disco and holder of Best
Breakthrough DJ at London’s Fabric.
Shindig is also the perfect setting to host the 10-year birthday celebrations of the multi-award winning
record label: Ghetto Funk. The festivities will take shape in the record label’s nightclub venue at
Shindig. Dance the weekend away with the artists who pioneered the party breaks sound: Chali 2NA
and Krafty Kuts; Stanton Warriors and Dread MC; A Skillz; Stickybuds, Ed Solo and JFB; Too
Many T’s; Featurecast; Slynk, WBBL and Father Funk to name just a handful. Expect the trademark
whomping basslines with a bit of wobble and some boombap thrown in for good measure. It’s a true
celebration: the coming of age of a sound and scene that’s going from strength to strength.
Will Lardner, Festival co Founder says:
"I'm so excited about 2020. It's the most diverse line up we've ever seen. From gospel choirs to Shindig
regulars and everything in between: pioneers, legends and luminaries, this is a once in a lifetime
opportunity to dance the weekend away in beautiful new surroundings."
This year’s fancy dress theme is Mardi Gras. Presenting Shindiggers with the perfect peacocking and
parading opportunity. Don feathers, beads, gather your festival krewe and bring the best shimmys and
shakedowns you’ve got.
Shindig Festival has evolved over the years from being a party for the network of friends of the Ghetto
Funk record label to a festival with a reputation for an incredible line up and a super friendly vibe. It’s
a glorious mash up of a gig, a free party, a circus show, a series of curious craft workshops, a wellbeing
retreat and a kid’s party. Voted ‘Best For Family Rave’, it has been blazing a trail since 2014 and
attracting an ever more diverse crowd.
There are no main stages, just a beautiful arrangement of stretch marquees. From watching comedy to
hearing some spoken word or discovering a new skill, there’s something for everyone. Bringing a
healthy dose of foot stomping funk and a packed programme of entertainment for all ages, Shindig
Festival offers relaxation and revelry in equal measures.
